MOUNT APATITE TRAIL WORK DONE BY CUB SCOUT PACK 111

Neither rain, nor mosquitos nor poison ivy kept the cub scouts of Pack 111 from their work towards a National Conservation Award.  Saturday, June 11th , 15 cub scouts and 16 parents assembled at  the Small Road entrance to Mount Apatite Park.  With 325 acres of tree covered hills, small brooks and a four mile hiking and biking trail it is Auburn’s largest city park.  In February John Herrick, a parent leader of Pack 111, contacted Dana Little, board member of the Androscoggin Land Trust, to develop a conservation award project.  They decided to improve the trail in Mount Apatite Park.  With the approval of Mike Bolduc, Recreational Director for the City of Auburn, parents and their children worked together to transform a muddy section of the trail into a dry path.  The cub scouts dug over 100 feet of ditches, reinforced the sides with logs, and lined the bottoms with rocks, all to prevent erosion and keep water off the trail.  They also created a causeway with nearby rocks. The finished trail provides a dry pathway for hikers and bikers.   After two hours of dedicated work they celebrated their success with hamburgers and hot dogs.  The cub scouts of pack 111 and Androscoggin Land Trust hope to collaborate on yearly ventures in Auburn trail work.
