The Hooper Pond area was identified by the Department of Conservation's Maine Natural Areas Program as being of statewide ecological importance due to its exemplary pond and streamshore vegetation and high quality wildlife habitat. ALT purchased the bulk of the preserve from Robert & Eva Philbrook and Pat Malmo & Richard Blaisdell in 2003 and 2004 with assistance from The Land for Maine’s Future fund. ALT was given 13.5 acres of wetland property by Barbara Bubier in 2003 and an additional 7.5 acres by Steve and Kathy Boucher in 2004.
