Fall Foliage Paddle at Androscoggin Riverlands
October 15, 2011
Androscoggin Riverlands State Park the Focus of Last Fall Foliage Paddle
Trip to be co-led by the Androscoggin Land Trust and the Maine Department of Conservation
Turner, Maine - The Androscoggin Land Trust (ALT) is announcing the last of its three fall foliage paddling trips on the Androscoggin River, scheduled for this Saturday, October 15th, beginning at 10 AM. The paddling trip will depart from the boat access on Center Bridge Road in Turner at the northern end of the Androscoggin Riverlands and include a roundtrip of approximately eight miles.
This paddling trip will follow the shoreline of the newly designated Androscoggin Riverlands State Park, a property first conserved in the early 1990's by local conservationists that played a role in creating ALT. State Park staff will join the group to provide an overview of on-going efforts of this nearly 2,600 acre park.
With eight miles of protected and undeveloped riverfront, and a shoreline that meanders in and out of protected coves, a paddler could spend the better part of the day enjoying the views from the water without worry of quick water. With a one hundred foot tall dam downstream, the Androscoggin River is reshaped into more of a lake in this section known as Gulf Island Pond. Those joining this trip will be able to learn the history of this property, which was once a landscape dominated by rolling farm fields and a small village, all destroyed with the rising waters behind Gulf Island Dam in 1925.
Easily accessible off of State Route 4, and a short 25 minute drive from the heart of downtown Lewiston-Auburn, Maine's fifth largest state park provides access to many of the state's traditional outdoor experiences with the backdrop of a major river and, in this season, the multiple colors of autumn.
For those seeking more information, requests can be made to the Androscoggin Land Trust at 207-782-2302.
