The Captain Harris Homestead Preserve is a 325-acre property, which has been in the same family since 1789, including Captain Harris who was one of the earliest settlers to Lewiston. The property contains over 6000 feet of frontage along Hooper Brook including significant Inland Waterfowl and Wading Bird Habitat.
The Harris Homestead Preserve is downstream from 195 acres of existing ALT conservation land at the Hooper Pond Conservation Area, the acquisition of which was funded by the Land for Maine’s Future Program in 2004. At 325 acres, the Harris Homestead Preserve is not only the largest block of conservation land in the Town of Greene, but its size meets a key criterion for protecting species sensitive to human disturbance. As stated by the Beginning With Habitat program of Maine IF&W, many of those species require large blocks of habitat over 250 acres in size.
The Androscoggin Land Trust is a membership supported land conservation organization dedicated to protecting important natural areas, traditional landscapes, and outdoor experiences within the Androscoggin River watershed by promoting stewardship and supporting a network of public and privately held conservation land. We currently conserve over 4,750 acres of land, including over ten miles of riverfront along the Androscoggin River.
The Stanton Bird Club owns and manages the Thorncrag Sanctuary in Lewiston and the Woodbury Sanctuary in Monmouth and offers free monthly natural history programs and field trips throughout the state.

Directions: Meet at Staples Parking Lot off Lisbon St. in Lewiston at 2pm and we’ll carpool to the property.
