LA Trails - Trail Building Skill Workshop
June 26, 2010
LA Trails, a program of ALT, will host its first trail maintenance workshop on Saturday June 26th.
In partnership with Off the Beaten Path, a locally-based professional trail building business, this training will be offered free of charge to those interested in building their trail stewardship skills and joining LA Trails as a volunteer trail steward.
LA Trails expects to offer another workshop later in the summer and eventually build this into an annual series to expand the volunteer network to steward our amazing trails in Lewiston-Auburn.
Topics to be covered include:
-
Survey and Design techniques: measuring grades, analyzing drainage, setting pin flags, learning about anchors, gateways, soils and other design elements, etc.
-
Corridor clearing: using hand saws, loppers, etc to clear a new path
-
Tread delineation and hardening: grubbing out the organic and making a nice, stable place to walk
-
Trail obliteration: closing down an old trail, de-compacting soil, transplanting, restoration, vertical mulch, etc.
-
Signage, barriers, and trail user management: where and how to install signs and barriers such as large boulders or bollards to keep unwanted traffic and vehicles off the trail
Light refreshments will be provided and no tools or previous experience needed. Pre-registration is required and will be limited to 15 participants. Please call LA Trails at 207-782-2302 or email info@latrails.org for more information or to register.
