June

National Trails Day Events

June 6 at several locations

  • Canton Stewardship Day, Canton, 9 am
    Join ALT's Mike Auger for a clean-up of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife boat launches. Meet at Canton Municipal Building, Route 140, Canton. Rain or shine.

  • Mt. Apatite Trail Stewardship, Auburn, 9 am
    Join Dana Little and ALT's LA Trails program for a 3-hour walk and workday at Auburn's Mt. Apatite. Meet at 9 am at the Small Road entrance. Rain or shine.

  • Homestead Trail Walk, Turner, 9:30 am
    Join Judy Marden and Jonathan LaBonte of the Androscoggin Land Trust for a 4-mile walk on this historic property and learn about the old homes once located along this stretch of the Androscoggin River. Meet at the Center Bridge Road parking lot. Rain or shine.

  • Ridgeline Trail Hike, Turner, 8:30 am
    Join the Maine Department of Conservation for a 9-mile walk along this trail with gorgeous views. Allow 5--6 hours; bring water, lunch, and sturdy hiking shoes. Contact Kathy Eickenberg at the Bureau of Public Lands at 287-4963 for more information. Pre-registration is not required.

Water Safety Training

June 13 10:00am - David Rancourt River Preserve, Lewiston
Learn about water safety with the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Department, and then take a short walking tour of the David Rancourt River Preserve.

11th Annual Chief Worumbo Androscoggin River Race

July 12 Sunday - Durham to Lisbon, 11 am
Part of the Town of Lisbon's Moxie Festival
The Chief Worumbo Androscoggin River Race is a 6-mile fun-for-the-whole-family race with possible class I rips and easy class II rapids.

Entry fee is $15 per person. Entries received before Friday, July 3 will receive a race T-shirt and lunch. Race-day registration includes lunch only. No t-shirts will be available for race-day registrants, though merchandise will be available for purchase. For non-participants, there are several sandwich/ice cream shops within half a mile of the take-out site.

Race day registration begins at 9:00 am at the Durham Boat Launch on Rte. 136 in Durham near the Auburn/Durham line. (Please note that this launch site is NOT the Durham River Park also on Rte 136.) Please leave enough time to ensure getting on the river for the 11:00 am mass start.

The race starts at 11:00 am.

The race finish is just under the railroad trestle where the Sabattus River joins the Androscoggin on Rte. 196 in Lisbon.

ALT Annual Picnic

Join us for our traditional July picnic barbecue and enjoy a paddle around Gulf Island Pond.

Guided Bird Walk with Stanton Bird Club

August 12 Wednesday - Alexander-Harkins Preserve, Auburn
Join Stan DeOrsey of the Stanton Bird Club for a guided walk highlighting the flora and fauna of the Alexander-Harkins Preserve.

Great Falls Balloon Festival Paddle Launch

August 21--23 Fri, Sat, Sun
Join the Great Falls Paddling Society throughout the festival as we observe the balloon launches from the unique perspective of the Androscoggin River. We'll paddle from New Auburn to the Great Falls during each morning and evening launch of the three-day festival. We'll meet at the New Auburn boat launch half an hour prior to each launch.
