Leased Lands

In 1998, ALT received long-term conservation leases on 968 acres owned by International Paper (in addition to significant acreage given outright to ALT - see ALT Preserves) The agreement for the land arose from IP’s re-licensing agreement for four dams on the Androscoggin River: Otis, Riley, Jay and Livermore Falls. As part of our agreement with IP, we manage the leased lands for wildlife habitat while having the option to practice sustainable forestry.

The leased lands contain a wide variety of important wildlife habitat including mature upland hardwood and conifer forests, open wetlands and floodplain forests along the Androscoggin River.

At the end of our lease agreement, the land trust will have the opportunity to either continue the leases if another Federal Regulatory Commission license is required or purchase the land at fair market value.
